Alvin S. Teirstein, MD, was one of the giants in the history of Mount Sinai. Until his death in 2011 at the age of 83, Dr. Teirstein was a world-renowned expert in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sarcoidosis. He served thousands of patients with distinction and taught generations of future leaders in pulmonary medicine across a career at Mount Sinai that spanned nearly 60 years, including 27 years as Chief of what is now the Catherine and Henry Gaisman Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.

From their earliest days, Mount Sinai and Goldman Sachs were shaped by a common understanding: that institutions do not exist apart from their communities, but are responsible to them. Both were founded in 19th‑century New York, forged by immigrants, animated by a sense of civic duty, and sustained over generations by individuals who believed that professional success carries with it an obligation to serve the public good.

Ji Woo Park and Carlos Ortega Rios took different paths on their medical education journeys. They are about to arrive at a similar destination in part because of Mount Sinai student scholarships.
